For this project we were tasked with creating a blue print/idea that we can use in the ninth grade commons that would benefit the students.
My design for the ninth grade commons was to turn it into a morning lounge/cafe. I added two large tables for students to eat pastries and drink coffee in the morning and also so they would have a place to sit and work. This way they can stay awake throughout the day so they could focus, and be able to complete classroom tasks if the classroom is too loud. There should be one pastry counter located near the coffee counter in the corner. It should be the same size as the coffee counter; 2 feet wide, 6 feet long, and 3 feet tall. The tables will vary in size, but on will be around 4 feet long and 2.5 feet wide right next to the “L” couch, while the other should be about 4 feet by 4 feet then almost 3 feet high. The tables will have standard chairs that we already use in classes and the amount of chairs around the table (other than the table by the couch which already has dominant seating) will vary depending on the amount of students sitting there. The fact that there is seating for work, and food for the student to stay awake and focused is relevant to our education, unlike most people’s ideas - which is unique, which is why my space is the best for the ninth grade commons.
I gained a lot of critique from classmates, but Jaden B. and Elise R. probably gave me the best advice with my first draft; my first draft was extremely blank and had little in it that was actually relevant to anyone. They were the ones who told me to fill in the space and maybe add some sort of theme so that there was more of an interest in my plan when I presented it thats what led to the Cafe design. I was never a morning person and because of that I drink coffee constantly, so I looked into having breakfast and coffee served here so I could actually be awake throughout the day, along with any other students who were not early risers. The professional who came in also gave extremely good advice as she told me about adding a view point to make the angles look different, and although I didn’t add that due to the fact that i would have to completely redraw up the blueprint in a way i didn’t understand fully, I was able to look into a different type of draft.
My four geometric shapes were embedded in small places in the print. The measured angles i need for the tv mount, after all if the were lopsided they would look rather odd and i need the perfect angle to cover just enough space to hold up the Tv without taking up too much space on the wall. The use of parallel lines was in almost every table or counter I used to create perfect sides, but it wasnt until the Tvs that I actually used both parrelel lines and transversals. I used these as i created the tv itself, and as for the mount is was cut by the lines of the tv as a transversal. I used translation, rotation, and reflection with the chairs so I could place them perfectly along the tables and inside the common space. This way the chairs would be all odd and different but the same and look clean on the blue print.
I enjoyed the fact that we could basically do whatever we wanted for the plan. Though if i were given the choice i would have done something more exotic than just a cafe, that way it catches people's attention more than just a simple place to drink coffee and have breakfast.
